The Cross Revealed

God has given us all that we need to lead a life pleasing to Him. We abandon confidence in ourselves or other men, and cast ourselves on Jesus, "The author and finisher of our faith".

Be still

"Be still and know that I am God". Psalm 46:10.

I suppose that this verse is easy to cite when there is no turmoil blowing in one's life. Why would we strive if everything is going well? But what is the key to remaining calm during the storm? As I try to negotiate the latest blast of wind, I am pondering this question. But what exactly am I seeking? To feel better? To make the situation right? We were going along so well, and now, not so much. "Let's get back to where we were", I say. But do I forget God's absolute sovereignty? Do I tell Him, "Well, this one is too much for me, God"?

Like all storms, this too shall pass. And then be forgotten. And I will go along my merry way, naively missing the warning signs for the next one. What then is the key for the moment when my soul is in agony? Like David, I speak to my soul: "Why art thou downcast within me? Put thou hope in God". Rarely does God remove the hurt in response to my prayers, but His promise is that He will always be with me, His rod and staff giving me comfort.

God is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient. He has unlimited power, and is everywhere at every time, and knows perfectly the end from the beginning. And he loves me. I must never, ever, forget that fact. What will I have learned? Lean on Him. He keeps in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on Him, Is 26:3.
